The road layout is the whole story

Canggu has very few roads and a great many people using them. Jalan Raya Canggu, Batu Bolong, Pantai Berawa and Pererenan run roughly parallel to the coast, and the lanes joining them are narrow — often one-and-a-half vehicles wide, and frequently blocked by a delivery van or a parked scooter. Google Maps will happily route you down a gang that narrows into a footpath.

Practical consequence: a smaller bike genuinely serves you better here than a bigger one. The 125cc Grand Filano is the easiest thing in our fleet to thread past a blocked gang and to park outside a café that has no space left.

When it jams, and how to ride around it

Traffic builds sharply from roughly 16:00 as the sunset crowd moves toward the beach, and Batu Bolong near the beach entrance is the worst of it. Mornings before 09:00 are the opposite: the same roads are close to empty and the light is better anyway.

The two chokepoints worth knowing are the Berawa junction and the stretch of Batu Bolong nearest the sand. Both can be avoided by cutting through Umalas on the inland lanes rather than staying on the coast road.

Parking

Assume you will pay for parking at the beach and at the busier beach clubs — Rp 2.000–5.000 is normal, and the attendant watches the bike. It is worth it. Away from the beach most cafés have an informal strip out front where scooters simply line up.

Two habits save trouble: park facing out so you are not reversing into traffic, and take the key rather than leaving it in the ignition, which is common practice here and a bad one.

Conditions to expect

Sand blows onto the road surface near every beach access, and it behaves like gravel under braking — brake earlier and straighter than you would at home. In the wet season the low sections around Berawa and Pererenan flood quickly and drain slowly; if a stretch of water has no traffic crossing it, that is information, not an invitation.

Loose dogs are a genuine hazard on the quieter inland lanes, particularly at dawn and dusk.

Which bike

For a stay based in Canggu, the Grand Filano or Stylo 160 are the easier machines to live with — light, easy to park, quick through gaps. If your week includes regular runs to Ubud, Uluwatu or the airport with a passenger and luggage, the PCX160 is worth the extra: the seat is better over distance and the 30-litre box swallows a full-face helmet.
