Take the bigger bike

This is the one place we will actively talk you out of the cheapest option. The climbs up from Padang Padang and out of Bingin are steep enough that a 125cc scooter carrying two people and a bag will struggle and overheat on a hot afternoon. The PCX160 or NMAX Neo have the torque for it and will make the difference on every hill you meet.

If you are riding solo and light, the Stylo 160 handles the Bukit fine. Two-up, take the maxi.

Distances are deceptive

Uluwatu is not a village, it is a whole peninsula. Padang Padang to Melasti is 20 minutes. Bingin to the temple is 15. Nothing is walkable, and taxis are scarce and expensive once you are off the main road — which is precisely why renting here pays for itself.

The roads

The main artery, Jalan Raya Uluwatu, is wide and sealed. The access roads down to individual beaches are steep, narrow, sometimes single-lane with passing spots, and often end in a car park at the top of a cliff staircase. Ride these slowly and use the engine to brake on the way down rather than riding the brake lever.

Sand blows across the road near the beach entrances. On a bend, it behaves like gravel.

Fuel

Petrol stations thin out considerably once you are past Jimbaran. Fill up before you head onto the Bukit, and treat the roadside stalls selling fuel in bottles as a top-up rather than a plan.

Wind and weather

The clifftops are exposed and the crosswind is real, particularly in the afternoon on the western side. Keep both hands on the bars near the cliff edges. Rain arrives quickly here and the limestone dust turns slick in the first minutes of a shower — the raincoats are in the seat.
