Riding in Denpasar
A real city, ridden properly
Denpasar traffic is heavier than the tourist areas but considerably more disciplined. People stop at lights, stay in lane, and signal. Ride the way the locals ride — steadily, predictably, no sudden moves — and it is one of the easier places to get around, because everyone else is doing the same.
The one-way systems in the centre around Jalan Gajah Mada and the Puputan square area are extensive. Follow the signs rather than the map.
Rush hour is real here
Unlike the beach areas, Denpasar has an actual commute. 07:30–09:00 and 16:00–18:00 are slow, particularly on Jalan Teuku Umar, Jalan Gatot Subroto and the approaches to the bypass. Outside those windows the city moves well.
Checkpoints and paperwork
Police checks are more routine in Denpasar than in the tourist strips, and enforcement is straightforward rather than negotiable. Carry your passport, your International Driving Permit with the motorcycle category, and wear the helmet with the strap done up. Keep the bike's registration in the seat compartment — it lives there.
Parking
Metered and attended parking throughout the centre, usually Rp 2.000. Shopping centres have proper motorcycle levels. Do not leave a bike on the pavement in the commercial streets; it will be moved, and in the centre it may be clamped.
